Welcome back: Chulu (L) is hugged by a DPP member

People’s Party (PP) regional secretary for the Centre Frazer Chulu yesterday dumped PP and rejoined DPP which he left more than a year ago.

Speaking at DPP headquarters in Lilongwe where he was welcomed back into the party, Chulu said he has dumped PP because it has less structures on the ground than DPP, claiming PP is becoming unpopular among the masses.

“There is nothing wrong I have done at PP, but I have come back because DPP is stronger than PP as it has more party structures which can take it into government next year,” said Chulu who was DPP regional organising secretary  before he left the party.

He was welcomed by the party’s vice-president (Centre) HetherwickNtaba and secretary general Dr. Jean Kalilani who also claimed that the party has received several requests from PP members who wish  to defect to DPP.

Said Ntaba: “People are comparing the strength of the parties and making judgments on their own. It is not easy to get a party’s secretary for the region. It is a loud statement that something is going wrong somewhere.”

Kalilani said the party will announce names of other defecting members later.

Reacting to Chulu’s claims, PP deputy publicity secretary Ken Msonda said: “What Chulu is saying about PP is his personal opinion. His allegations are laughable because as a person at the region, it was his responsibility to make sure that the structures are there.

“As far as we are concerned, PP has got structures across the country and people are joining the party every day. Normally, people who joined PP for some personal interests get frustrated when they see that their interests are not being satisfied,” said Msonda.
